Working moms and the last 20 lbs-

It has been 9 months since I had my 2nd baby and I thought by now I'd be well within my size 6's.  Nope - not even close.  These last 20 lbs are the most stubborn.  I've tried saying to myself (every Monday), ok, this is it, I'm going to get serious about this and shed this extra weight, but it just won't go.

Now, please understand, exercise is not an option right now. There is not enough time in the day to get to the gym, but that should change as spring approaches.  I've told myself, lose one pound a week and by June, it will be gone, but it (the scale) just won't budge.

At this pont, I'm considering Weight Watchers or NutriSystem, but the thought of adding one more step to my day is overwhelming.  I'd love to hear from all the working moms out there that have been able to get to their pre-pregnancy weight and what some of your successful strategies were.

Some of the things I'm doing now, without even thinking about it, that should contribute to my weight loss:

  • Go up and down the stairs 10-20 times a day changing, chasing, and putting down for naps. (Similar to lunges, right?)
  • Do laundry for two adults and two children - also requires more stair climbing. (Lunges and bicep curls-laundry is heavy)
  • Wash bottles, sippy cups, all plastic utensils & plates, thermos, & bibs. (Bicep curls and light triceps)
  • Give baths, put on pajamas, and get kids ready for bed. (ab crunches, squats, biceps, triceps- may as well run a marathon since I'm tuckered out by 6pm)
I feel like I should be a twig!

There is one thing I know for sure, by the time summer is here, I'll be in my size 6's - OR ELSE!!!

Oh, Mary, you are singing my song. I am so annoyed that my clothes don't fit right, but I refuse to buy anything else new. I do not know how to fit the gym in and going for a jog right now (in this weather) isn't going to happen. Exercise is a big problem for me, but the real problem is the snacks. At the end of the long day of work and wrangling kids, I feel I *deserve* a treat. I can eat healthy meals, but if I have a treat mid-day or at the end of the day and do it every day...I think I know why I am in trouble. My office just sent out a notice that they are going to offer Weight Watchers at work...and I am considering it. I have the same 20 pounds that I want to get rid of - HELP!!

Your blog made me smile...not because I think it's funny, but because I totally understand. I never lost the last 10 pounds from Maya before getting pregnant with #2...and that was with running and going to the gym...

I can tell you what I have heard from other people though:

Both of my sisters in law work and have 2 kids each. They both did not lose the baby weight until their kids got older (5+) and they were able to dedicate more time to themselves. That being said...they are both in size 4 or 6 now, but they never eat.

My mom has been on and off fad diets like weight watchers, jenny craig, etc. since my brother and I were born...they work for a while, but it's almost impossible not to cheat (ordering pizza for a quick dinner, going out to eat).

I think you look GREAT- and you need to be patient with the weight...both of your kids are still so young! It WILL come off eventually...you will most likely have to do 30 minutes or more of cardio a day (when you are able to find the time) for it to totally go away. My friend who is a personal trainer tells me this all the time :)

Try not to worry about it- this has been a crazy year for you anyway with the new baby and new job and everything!

Mary - I also think you look great but having had my own weight battles throughout my life, know that looking great is not always enough. I have luckily lost my baby weight - primarily due to breast feeding and all the activities you mentioned above that I, too, am the only one doing but I still need to lose more (always have had to)...I did try to join weight watchers to see if I could accelerate the weight loss after birth but I went to exactly ONE meeting (and showed up late) and could not for the life of me find time to effectively record my eating - which I think is key to the process. I gave up on that for now and have just been trying to be "good" - I also got the Wii for christmas and want to try to use that as much as possible but exercise seems like a major task right now...not something I feel I can do with any regularity. Bottom line - I'm with you sistah...no answers, just more support for the fact that this is a hard time...but we know that. Hope you are well and good luck with the diet/exercise!

I feel your pain Mary. I gained forty-five pounds during my pregnancy and never had success losing the last 10-20 pounds no matter what I did. I'd love to be a size three again but I think as long as you eat right, get some exercise as best as you can fit into your schedule and feel healthy, I wouldn't stress about those last few pounds.
